Norfolk gets some interesting news for this weekend.
The number of 2013-14 Minnesota Wild players on the Admirals roster grew to two this afternoon with the addition of Dany Heatley. Signed in the summer by Anaheim to a 1-year, $1 million deal, the veteran winger has been injured for most of the season. Heatley required groin surgery last month and was placed on the disabled list. He is now close to a full recovery, getting a conditioning loan for the weekend. Expect Heatley to play both games against Springfield.
Heatley, of course, joins netminder Ilya Bryzgalov on a loan from Anaheim. Bryzgalov was expected to play on Wednesday night, but was a healthy scratch. It didn’t matter as Yann Danis stopped all 37 Charlotte shots en route to a 3-0 Norfolk win. Danis should get some rest this weekend with Bryzgalov starting at least Friday’s game. Read more about the Bryzgalov signing at Puq.
More news on a busy Thursday: rookie defenseman Josh Manson has been returned to the Admirals. Manson was unexpectedly cast in an everyday role for the Ducks, where he had an admirable performance. While he barely hit the scoresheet, Manson had great advanced statistics. Manson’s return likely means that Ducks defender Ben Lovejoy is on the verge of returning from his broken hand; perhaps as soon as Friday’s game at Edmonton. Manson will be either top-pairing or top-4 in Norfolk, and this will allow him to work on his game. While he has been surprisingly good at the NHL level, Manson is a rookie and certainly has room to improve. Maybe he’ll find some offense?
Two more moves were made within the organization. Defenseman David MacDonald was released from his PTO and will return to ECHL Cincinnati. MacDonald appeared in five games with the Ads, collecting 2 assists. Winger Matthew Pistilli was also released from his PTO, and will be returned to the Fort Wayne Komets. Pistilli appeared in 10 games, scoring a goal and 2 assists.
It figures that when I finished with exams, all of this news would break.
